ABOUT kakugan

Will McFarlane, better known as Kakugan, has been a musician since young. Beginning at the age of 8, he and everyone around him knew he was bound to be an artist.

Kakugan started singing at the age of 8, beginning his classical training which would form his technique as he grew. He delved into many different forms of music as he grew, performing in operas and musical theatre performances. However, above all else his love was found in Hip Hop and EDM music, listening to artists such as Lil Wayne, Skrillex and Lil Peep. This is what began his journey. It was at the age of 15 that he started creating his own music, recording vocals over beats found from YouTube with nothing but Logic Pro, a laptop and a USB microphone, releasing these songs on Soundcloud. In this era he would be mentored by more experience rappers as part of an international collective dubbed “Blissful Boys”. Although he started off small with his emo influenced rap music, throughout the years he would practice and branch out into other areas. Recently working in studios around the world, he draws influence from everywhere, implementing this influence into his unique style of music blending Hyperpop, EDM and Indie Pop. He is now currently part of a Brisbane-based underground collective, “143WORLDWIDE” that consists of artists and producers from Brisbane, AUS and Sydney, AUS.

In 2021, Kakugan started to delve into the creative field of music production. From the beginning of his journey of becoming a producer, his objective has been to create in as many genres as possible, eventually taking aspects from these styles and implementing them into his own style. In 2023 he started producing for other Brisbane-based artists, focusing on pop and EDM influenced musicians. Although production is a newly found love for him, he is pursuing this as a career path in hopes of working for independent labels as producer for many different artists.

Kakugan is an Indie Pop and Hyperpop artist based out of Brisbane, Australia. Through many years of experimentation and development, his music has evolved into a guitar-based pop style with large soundscapes, intricate vocal production and multi-genre sections. His lyrics focus on areas of struggle and sorrow such as heart-break, loss, addiction and depression. He pours his own experiences into his music creating a real connection with his audience. A big part of his artistry is trying new sounds to aid in developing his own personal style which is constantly undergoing progression. Constant collaboration with other artists allows him to continuously develop his expertise in areas such as production, song writing and audio engineering.
